Small
painting, 28” X 12”. Signed by Sidney M Broad, early
or mid 20th C.
The painting was substantially damaged
with tears, holes and missing paint. It was also very dark and
had atmospheric pollution dirt ingrained in the impasto. The canvas
was fragile. Because of the fragility and the level of cleaning
necessary to bring the colours back to more or less its original
condition it was decided to reline. This was done on a heated
vacuum table. The procedure mmediately added support and stability
to the canvas and the paint layer.
The picture was cleaned, the areas where the paint layer and the
ground was missing were filled in with ‘gesso’. The
new filling was ‘textured’ to replicate the surrounding
area and finally retouched with restoration colours.
A final spray varnish was applied to protect the surface.
The whole procedure is 100% reversible.
The client chose a reproduction frame appropriate to the age of
the painting.
