There were several areas at the edges where the paint layer had been damaged and was missing. This may have happened if it was framed before the varnish was completely dried so it got stuck to the surface of the painting . When the frame was removed it took the paint layer with it.
The varnish had oxidised and was looking slightly yellow. It also had atmospheric pollution and insect dirt.
The old varnish was removed, the missing areas were retouched and it was spray varnished.
The whole procedure is 100% reversible
