Woodworm on the stretcher
Woodworm in the stretcher

This painting of a Madonna and child was purchased by a client at auction. Its origin is unknown but thought to be Peruvian.

There were signs of advanced levels of deterioration and serious infestations of woodworm, mildew and mould. There were also two significant areas of damage to the paintwork.

The paint layers had lifted in several places, probably because it had been stored in a humid environment at some point.

Treatment involved removing all surface dirt then relining the canvas. A new stretcher was made and stained to match and the frame was treated with two kinds of chemicals to preserve and prevent reinfestation. Restoration paint was then carefully applied to repair the damaged areas.
