Frame before repair

This is a delightful portrait of a young lady. It is circa 1865 in the English School style.
It has what looks like the original frame from the British Regency period; it is decorated with Guilloche corners and foliate spandrels. It has suffered damage to corners and to the inner embellishments. It was painted rather than gilded.

The paint layer was thin and flaky in some areas, the varnish was heavily oxidised which gave it an overall yellowish hue.

The painting was removed from its frame to enable work on the canvas. The varnish was removed with solvents of different strengths until the true colour intended by the artist appeared. It was a beautiful pearly grey silk with the sheen of the material captured skilfully by the artist.

The frame had the missing areas restored and painted with gold paint. The surface was spray varnished for protection.

All the work done to this picture is 100% reversible.
