This
is a beautiful hand painted engraving by Will Daniel, 1825.
The engraving had been attacked by the airborne
fungus that produces the ‘freckled’ appearance called
‘foxing’. It was thoroughly covered with it including
the mount and the board at the back. The original frame had small
dents and missing areas.
Normally an engraving can be cleaned by the
process of ‘bathing’ but in this case, because of
the hand painted details it was decided not to use that method.
Instead it was treated as it if it was a watercolour with the
method of ‘spraying’.
This was long process because spraying is less
aggressive, precisely to protect the painted colours. The outcome
was very rewarding and subtle little touches of colour that were
invisible before came back to life.
It was re mounted on acid free materials to
avoid the return of the ‘foxing’. The glass used was
one with UV filter to protect the work from the effects of ultra
violet radiation.
