Encounters was the name given to an exhibition by Chilean artists at the Mall Galleries in London. Eight of the exhibits were by Maria Rita Phillips and they date from the 1970's.

On many of the paintings the paint layer was thin and flaky. Several corners were damaged. There were holes in some pictures and evidence of mould.

The series were all cleaned then repaired with gesso before being restored using water soluble pigments to match the original exactly.

On one painting it was discovered that the artist had painted over an older canvas. This made the restoration particularly challenging.
