This lovely maritime painting was in a pitiful state. It had grime, loose paint, rotting canvas and broken tacking edges. There were even food stains - suspected to be curry! It had not been well cared for and was very frail.

The painting is signed Marshall and dated 1915.

Treatment was extensive. It was cleaned with soap and white spirit several times. The varnish was heavily oxidised so this was removed with solvents after careful testing. It revealed the fragile nature of the paint and it was then decided to reline the painting.

The relining was carried out on a heated vacuum table after extensive calculations.

The resultant new canvas was re stretched back onto the original stretcher before all missing coloured area were filled with gesso and retouched using a variety of techniques.
